Keyword determination
Words is what searches use to find a internet site. All that a search engines really is, is a large dictionary where you look to find what is relevant using words. For this reason words and what words are being used is very important to any website. Because of screen size limitation and human capacity to see all the facts search engines only show us what they believe is most important in the first screen, other results are all there it is a matter of looking further to find these other results. However because of our human limitations of time, effort and concentration a searcher rarely looks past page three of the returned results. It is therefore very important to be ranked as relevant for the words that a searcher will use to find your service or product.
The keywords that are used on a internet sites content, in the web sites meta tags and in the sites linking strategy all help the search engines determine the relevance for a particular search term phrase.
So what are we looking for when we are trying to find what our best key word phrases are. The formula that is best used is
(Relevant + Popular search) – High competition keywords = Keyword Success
Relevance = those phrases that people are using who are looking for what your internet site offers. You may or may not feel that these keywords are relevant. Only search engine (market research) will tell what these are
A good methodology to follow is.
- Brain storm what you think are good keywords
- Examine your current log files
- View competitors meta tags and content for keywords
- Use a thesaurus to find related terms
- Use search engine search aggregator tools to verify
- Use plurals, nouns, tenses, and misspellings
- Add these keywords to meta tags, alt tags, title tags
- Add them liberally through out your content with more keywords at the beginning and at the end
Once you have your keywords don’t stop but continue to check to find out if your likely customers are using new phrases or different keywords that you might be able to use.
